October 23rd Speaker Meeting
William Herdman’s 1864 Views of Modern Liverpool by David Hearn
David Hearn is a keen and accomplished local historian who is responsible for ensuring that much local history is not lost. He returns this time to show us the Liverpool of 1864 as depicted by William Herdman based upon his discovery of a rare volume.
The celebrated Liverpool artist, W G Herdman published several volumes of lithographs ‘Pictorial Relics of Ancient Liverpool’ including views of architectural subjects.
One of William G ‘s many children was William Herdman, who in 1864 produced a volume called ‘Views in Modern Liverpool’ with text by Sir James Picton.
Whilst the work of W G Herdman is well known there was only ever one edition of William Herdman’s book.
This talk will be based upon some 1864 views and how the same view looks now, together with an insight as to how David believes Herdman achieved his stunning detail.
David will bring his original copy for people to look at but copies of his 2020 reprint will also be on sale.
Once again David is reacquainting us with some local history that could be easily overlooked. Prepare to be absorbed by yet another of his fascinating topics!
